NEW LENS FOR HIGH PRESCRIPTION PATIENTS

02/20/07

Dr. Patrick McGraw of Eye Care Specialists has recently completed his certification and initial implantation of the new VISIAN ICL, a new type of intraocular lens (IOL) used during refractive surgery for correcting myopia. Unlike IOLs that are used during cataract surgery, the Visian ICL does not replace the eye's natural lens. Instead, the ICL is placed between the iris and the natural lens.

What Makes the Visian ICL Different? Because this new IOL does not replace the lens, but supplements it like a prescription contact lens, it is sometimes referred to as an implantable contact lens. Unlike other IOLs the Visian ICL is made from Collamer, a unique, organic lens material, designed especially for the Visian lens. This proprietary lens material has greater biocompatibility than acrylic and silicone lenses. The Visian ICL is also foldable, requiring a smaller incision during the surgical procedure than other available lenses. It has a wide treatment range so that any patient told that their prescription is too high for LASIK treatment now has an exciting alternative. The Visian ICL has proven to be effective in patients within a wide range of refractive errors. In fact, the phakic IOL can correct/reduce myopia from -3.0 to -20.0. Before now, many of these individuals were not candidates for surgical eye correction. Clinical studies have shown how the Visian ICL is truly a breakthrough myopia treatment in terms of results. Because implantation of the IOL does not require any structural alteration of the eye, results are predictable and very stable.

“Sherri”, one of the most recent Visian Lens recipients says “this is the procedure of my dreams. After having the Visian Lens implanted in both eyes it feels like a miracle that I can see even better than I could with the contacts I have worn all my life. With a prescription of - 11 and -13, I never dreamed my vision could be so incredible without the hassle of contacts. My young son inherited my high prescription and I now know that there is hope for him when he gets a little older”. When asked, most people say that they would most like to get rid of their contact lenses and glasses because they feel limited in the pursuit of certain activities. Whether frustrated by the hassle of having to carry prescription sunglasses for use in outdoor activities or an inability to see clearly underwater, people who use glasses and contacts often refrain from enjoying their lives to the fullest. Most patients who have received the lens implantation are pleased with how streamlined their everyday activities have become without the need for glasses and contacts.
