An Emphasis on Patient Education

At Eye Care Specialists, we believe that patient education is an important component to delivering the exceptional eye care you deserve. Every new patient receives our New Patient Welcome Packet in the mail before their first appointment. This packet provides detailed information that will help you better understand the services available to you. New patients coming for LASIK or cataract surgery consultations also receive additional packets providing information on the benefits and risks of these procedures.

Initial consultations with our Pennsylvania eye doctors are extremely thorough. Our doctors will spend as much time as needed to provide you with detailed information on your recommended procedure, and they will answer any questions you may have about your treatment plan or our qualifications.

We will never recommend a procedure unless we believe it is the best course of action to ensure optimal levels of long term eye health. Due to our extensive team of ophthalmology and optometry specialists, we will often cross-refer you to other doctors in the practice to make sure your recommended treatment plan will best meet your needs.

Both cities were founded during the Revolutionary War era and played a major role in the region’s industrial growth during the 19th Century. The population grew rapidly during the middle of the century due to the large quantity of anthracite coal in the region. During the second half of the 19th Century, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre became an economic force in the coal, iron, and railroad industries.

In the 20th Century, Wilkes-Barre became the birthplace of Planters Peanuts, which was founded there in 1906. Other prominent companies that were based out of the region at various during the 20th Century include Woolworth’s, Bell Telephone, and HBO. In 1972, 365 subscribers of Service Electric Cable became the first people in the country to receive HBO, making Wilkes-Barre the birthplace of modern cable TV.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has also been a prominent hub for local sports. The area has been home to a minor league baseball team since 1989. From 1989-2006, the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Red Barons were the minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. During the early 2000s, the team featured a number of future Major League all-stars including Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino, and Cole Hamels.

In 2007, the team became the minor league affiliate of the New York Yankees and changed their name to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. However, the most notable sports moment in the area occurred in 1926 when Babe Ruth hit the longest home run in baseball history during an exhibition game in Wilkes-Barre. The home run is estimated to have traveled 650 feet.
