In the 20th Century, Wilkes-Barre became the birthplace of Planters Peanuts, which was founded there in 1906. Other prominent companies which were based out of the region at various during the 20th Century include Woolworth’s, Bell Telephone, and HBO. In 1972, 365 subscribers of Service Electric Cable became the first people in the country to receive HBO, making Wilkes-Barre the birthplace of modern cable TV.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has also been a prominent hub for local sports. The area has been home to a minor league baseball team since 1989. From 1989-2006, the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Red Barons were the minor league affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies. During the early 2000s, the team featured a number of future Major League all stars including Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Shane Victorino, and Cole Hamels. In 2007, the team became the minor league affiliate of the New York Yankees and changed their name to the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. However, the most notable sports moment in the area occurred in 1926 when Babe Ruth hit the longest home run in baseball history during an exhibition game in Wilkes-Barre. The home run is estimated to have traveled 650 feet.

Many of our doctors are also on staff at the Commonwealth Medical College in Scranton, PA, and Eye Care Specialists is a member of the Wilkes-Barre Women’s Organization for Networking (WWON), a non-profit women’s organization dedicated to supporting local businesses run by women.
